Three Signs of Spiritual Wellness?

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” 3 John 1:2 (NKJV).

This verse isn’t just a polite greeting, it is a Spirit-breathed reminder of how deeply God cares about every part of us. The Apostle John prayed for his friend Gaius to flourish, not only spiritually, but also physically and in every area of life. Notice the order…the health of the soul first, then everything else. That’s because when your inner life is strong and anchored in Christ, it spills over into the way you think, the way you handle challenges, and even the way you care for your body.

Think of it like the roots of a tree. If the roots are healthy and deep, the branches can stretch wide, the leaves stay green, and the fruit grows in season. But if the roots are dry or weak, it doesn’t matter how much water you pour on the leaves, the tree still won’t thrive. Your spiritual wellness is those roots, and when your soul is healthy, the rest of your life is positioned to flourish.

Imagine someone who makes time every morning for prayer, journaling, and exercise, not because it’s trendy, but because they want to honor God with their whole self. That person often finds that their relationships are healthier, their stress levels are lower, and they even make wiser choices with food, rest, and work. Their soul is prospering, and you can see the fruit in their everyday life.

Think about it…
When most people hear the word “wellness,” they think of diet plans, exercise routines, or maybe even spa days. While these things are helpful, they leave out the most important piece—our spirit. Without spiritual health, even the best self-care routines feel incomplete.

That’s why the concept of spiritual wellness is so powerful. It isn’t just about what we do; it’s about who we are becoming in Christ and how we align every part of our being—mind, body, and spirit—with Him.

New knowledge…
Spiritual wellness can be defined as the ongoing journey of aligning one’s inner values, beliefs, and purpose to create a balanced and fulfilling life that transcends individual challenges. Unlike physical health, which can often be measured with numbers or tests, spiritual wellness is reflected in how we live and the peace we carry in our daily lives.

Consider how scripture paints this picture. In 3 John 1:2, the Apostle John prays not only for outward health but for the soul’s prosperity. This suggests that wellness begins within, flowing outward to affect every other area of life.

Modern health studies even support this truth. Research indicates that practices such as prayer, meditation, and gratitude can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and enhance emotional resilience. In other words, the Bible’s ancient wisdom aligns with what science is only just confirming: when our spirit is nourished, our whole being benefits.

1. Peace in the Midst of Pressure
Spiritual wellness doesn’t mean life will always be easy, but it does mean we can carry peace no matter the storm. Philippians 4:7 reminds us that “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When your spirit is well, you begin to notice that your reactions shift and you lean into prayer instead of panic, and you find calm even in stressful circumstances.

2. Alignment of Values and Actions
A sign of wellness is when your faith shows up in your everyday choices. Micah 6:8 calls us to “do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” When what you believe on Sunday lines up with how you live on Monday, you experience greater wholeness and less inner conflict. Spiritual wellness brings consistency between what you value and how you act.

3. Connection with God and Others
Spiritual wellness thrives in relationships. Jesus said, “I am the vine, you are the branches” (John 15:5). Staying connected to Him through prayer, scripture, and worship gives us life and strength. But wellness doesn’t stop there, it overflows into how we love and serve others. John 13:34 reminds us that we are called to love one another, and when we do, it’s evidence that our spirit is being nourished.

Now let’s apply what we have learned…
This week, take a moment to check in with yourself:

  • How is my prayer life?
  • Am I caring for my body as a temple of the Holy Spirit?
  • Do I allow myself to rest, or do I push beyond my limits?

Pick one area to focus on. Start small, whether it’s adding a five-minute morning prayer, a 10-minute walk, or a commitment to go to bed earlier. Remember, peace is found in progress, not perfection.

Pause and Ponder
What does peace look like for me in this season of life?
